How to segment WhatsApp contacts for higher-campaign reply rates
Tagging, static vs rule segments, and the segment strategies that lift reply rates without sending more messages.
Why segmentation beats blasting
A segmented campaign sent to 2,000 relevant contacts will almost always outperform a generic blast to 10,000. Segmentation means sending each message only to the people it's actually for — by interest, city, purchase history, or recency. You spend less, annoy fewer people, and get higher reply rates.
In AiConva, segmentation is built on tags (manual labels), attributes (structured data like city or lifetime spend), and rule-based or static segments that combine them.
Tags vs attributes vs segments
Tags are flexible labels you apply to contacts — 'VIP', 'wholesale', 'diwali-2026-buyer'. Use them for behavioural or categorical grouping that changes over time. Attributes are structured fields — city, birthday, last-order-value — that are useful for rule conditions.
Segments are saved audiences. A rule segment updates dynamically (e.g. 'all contacts in Mumbai tagged VIP'); a static segment is a fixed list (e.g. 'these 50 attendees from last weekend's event'). Build the segment once, then target campaigns to it.
The segments worth building
- VIP / high-value: your top spenders — give them early access and exclusive offers.
- Lapsed customers: haven't bought in 60–90 days — target with a win-back offer.
- Recent buyers: bought in the last 30 days — upsell or request a review.
- By interest/product: bought category X — tell them about related category X accessories.
- By city/region: regional timing, language, and festive relevance differ across India.
- Opt-in recency: fresh opt-ins are most engaged in the first two weeks — message them while attention is high.
Measuring what works
After each campaign, compare reply and conversion rates across segments. You'll quickly see which slices are worth messaging and which are wasting your wallet. Double down on high-performing segments; prune or re-engage underperforming ones.
Segmentation compounds: every tag and attribute you add makes your next campaign smarter. A business that tags consistently for three months runs dramatically better campaigns than one that started yesterday.
