WhatsApp marketing for restaurants in India: a 2026 playbook

How Indian restaurants and cloud kitchens use WhatsApp for reservations, order updates, offers, and feedback — with templates, opt-in tactics, and a campaign calendar.

Restaurants were early adopters of WhatsApp — customers prefer messaging to calling, and food is visual and time-sensitive. But running restaurant WhatsApp well is different from running a personal chat: you need reservations, order tracking, offers, and feedback, all without spamming. This playbook covers what works for Indian restaurants and cloud kitchens in 2026.

The four message types that matter

First, order confirmations and updates — utility-category, cheap, and the highest-open messages you'll send. Second, table reservations and reminders — reduce no-shows with a 24-hour reminder. Third, offers and new menu launches — marketing category, segment by past order. Fourth, feedback requests after a meal. The restaurants template pack has all of these pre-written and Meta-approved.

Notice the mix: three of the four are utility (cheap, transactional). Restaurants that over-index on marketing blasts burn their list; ones that lead with useful updates keep customers engaged and receptive to the occasional offer.

Opt-in channels for restaurants

Dine-in: a QR code on the table or bill ('scan for offers'). Takeaway: a line on the receipt. Delivery: an opt-in checkbox at checkout on your site or app. Cloud kitchens: a card in the package ('scan for reorder and offers'). Each is free and captures a hungry, opted-in contact at the moment of highest satisfaction. See our organic list-building guide for the full channel breakdown.

Segmentation by behaviour

Tag contacts by frequency (weekly regulars vs occasional), by channel (dine-in vs delivery vs takeaway), and by preference (veg/non-veg, spicy, family meals). A weekday lunch offer to office workers, a weekend family-deal to families, a late-night suppers push to cloud-kitchen customers — each segmented send outperforms a generic blast. Segmentation is covered in depth in our contact segmentation guide.

Timing and frequency

Restaurant WhatsApp is timing-sensitive. Lunch offers send 11am–12pm; dinner offers 4–6pm; weekend brunch pushes Thursday evening. Don't send more than 2–3 marketing messages a week to any one contact — more trains people to mute you. Pair every marketing send with utility touches (order updates) so the relationship feels helpful, not promotional.
