WhatsApp opt-in best practices: how to (legally) grow your list

The compliant ways to collect WhatsApp opt-ins in India — checkboxes, keywords, QR codes, ads — and how to record consent for DPDP audit trails.

Your WhatsApp marketing is only as strong as your opt-in list — and only as safe as your consent records. This guide covers the opt-in channels that work in India and how to record each one for DPDP compliance. For the broader strategy, pair this with our organic list-building guide.

The valid opt-in channels

Website widgets and wa.me links (with a clear value proposition), checkboxes at form submission or checkout ('send me updates on WhatsApp'), in-store QR codes that open a chat, click-to-WhatsApp ad clicks (every click opens a conversation that counts as opt-in), and keyword invites ('text OFFERS to {{number}}'). Each captures explicit consent at a moment of engagement.

Recording the source

Every opt-in should record where and when it happened. AiConva stores an opt-in source and timestamp against each contact, so if Meta or a regulator ever asks 'where did you get permission to message this person', you can answer with the channel and date. This is the single most important compliance habit to build.

What doesn't count

Bought lists, scraped directories, business cards assumed as consent, past purchase assumed as marketing consent — none of these survive DPDP scrutiny, and they get your number banned by Meta fast. The short-term volume gain isn't worth the long-term channel loss. Build the list the right way, even if it's slower.

Value exchange drives opt-in rate

A specific value proposition outperforms a generic one. 'Get Diwali early-access offers on WhatsApp' converts far better than 'sign up for updates'. Offer something concrete in exchange for the opt-in — exclusive content, early access, a discount — and the opt-in rate multiplies.
